Modernized Pro Style Offense

"Inspired by, but not a replica of, the Ben Johnson (HC) / Chicago Bears offense."

+ Heavy Under Center presence in the early downs + Unique Shotgun 12p usage (if you follow the depth chart suggestions)

+ Early downs set the tone with high motion usage in the run game

+ Personnel gets heavier as the yardage gets shorter, (12, 21, & 22), introducing more PA + PA designed to attack with deep shots, rather than constant rollouts to underneath/crossers + Designed HB split/touches, via playcalling. (1st Down back & Long Yardage Back) + High usage of pre-sap motions, Jet & Escort motions primarily + Designed runs for WRs, Jet Sweep and multiple End Arounds

+ TE motions to both split him out wide, and motion him back to the line + Utilizes a TE in place of a FB

+ Mix of Outside Zone, Toss Sweep & Power O runs to attack the perimeter & edges

+ Zone & Trap heavy attack for the ground game inside the tackles

+ Often uses the FB(TE) or TE as motion blockers, but also as leakers on PA

+ High utilization of 3TE sets (13p) in RZ Fringe area, opens up big chunk plays off PA + Uses some Trickery in the RZ and GL situations (PA LT Sneak, and a few fake end arounds)

+ Empty & Spread looks for a ready-to-roll 2 Minute Offense

Notes :

  • QB : It's a Play-Action heavy offense, but not necessarily a Boot Action heavy one, so I don't put as much emphasis on mobility here, so Pocket Passer and Sleight of Hand take top priority.

  • HB : The HB1 is primarily your first down back, & short yardage back, where your HB2/3DHB will eat up most 2nd & Long and 3rd Down snaps. HB1 should lean a bit more towards power and being a bellcow, with the HB2 leaning more towards being dynamic, but both should be able to catch the ball out of the backfield.

  • FB : This offense won't use a FB, instead it will use either TE2 or TE3 at FB, depending on how deep your TE rotation is.

  • WR : The WR1 needs be a security blanket with Sure Hands, so I'd look to PRR & Route Artist, but lean PRR because of Downhill with WR1 having a 30% chance of taking handoffs. Now, WR2 should be someone dynamic with the ball in their hands as they will take 70% of WR handoffs. In both cases, they will be involved in the Mid Screen & Shallow Screen game as well, so the more RAC ability the better.

  • TE : I removed a lot of Y-Flex formations because I didn't like the play selection as much, and decided that TE1 will also play SLWR1 as a replacement. This will split him out wide a lot, while still playing TE1 in some 11 personnel groupings that don't use the SLWR. So that's why I aim for a Vertical Threat TE, as they will be playing a good chunk of their shogtun snaps out wide. The TE2 should be a well-balanced & better blocker, as they will slide in as TE1 when the SLWR is involved, making for some cool 2TE looks out of non-12p looks.

  • OL : Looking for Agile here, but will want to develop run blocking as your primary focus. Lots of Tackle Trap runs, so the tackles will need to be athletic, as well as Crack Toss & Mid Screens needing them out in space. The guards should be athletic as well, but there is a bit more wiggle room there, as there are some power runs with them as pullers, but mostly they'll be zone blocking on the inside. I've never liked Agile centers, better off using the run blocking abilities from Raw Strength, or PA Pass Blocking abilities from Pass Protectors.
